The Member of Parliament for Newark, Patrick Mercer (pictured right), is reported by Vincent Moss, of the Sunday Mirror, and Nigel Nelson, of The People, to have called David Cameron “an arse” and a “despicable creature”. Mercer is also reported to have claimed “I would take a beggar off the streets rather than have Cameron”, and said “Cameron is the worst politician in British history since William Gladstone.”
Mr Mercer is strongly denying that he made these remarks at a party and which were recorded on an iPhone. The quality of the recording is said to be poor.
Nelson revealed on Twitter earlier this evening that:
Giving context to the extraordinary attacks on Cameron, Vincent Moss tweets: “I think Patrick Mercer has been making his views on Cameron clear, privately, to fellow Tory MPs for a while”.
Mercer was the Shadow Minister for Homeland Security froom 2003 until 2007, when he was forced to resign his position.
