Ron Mushiso is a Conservative councillor on Hounslow Council and former candidate for the Greater London Assembly.
As a councillor and a candidate in the London Assembly Election, I’ve campaigned across South West London for years – an area that on paper, should be Conservative. Speaking to residents, they know what makes London and this nation great: opportunity, diversity of culture, and belief that hard work pays off. And that’s what conservatism is all about.
And on my own journey, I have learnt how important these principles are. From a small village in Uganda, where I worked in the fields, herding cattle with my mother and grandparents, and attending school (when we could afford it) to when I moved to London aged 12, learnt to speak English, and went to school here in the UK.
With hard work and opportunity, everything is possible. And that is why I also give back to my community as a teacher, rugby coach, and a Conservative Councillor.
I know the residents of South West London hold these values dear as well. That is why it has always traditionally been conservative. Until this election.
Despite still believing in these principles, we were completely rejected by voters. It didn’t matter how many doors we knocked on or how many hours we spent leafleting; the election had been decided months ago. And the reason is simple: we had lost the trust of the British public.
The people of South West London rightly expected their politicians to deliver; to champion these conservative principles. Instead, they got infighting and factionalism from politicians in Westminster. And we forgot our duty is to serve and deliver on what they wanted; to create the environment for opportunity and to cut taxes, not to serve ourselves by playing political games.
But South West London is still, at its heart, Conservative, and can be won again.
We now face a simple choice. We either choose more infighting and more defeat. Or, we close the chapter on division, unite behind a traditional conservative leader who can rebuild trust with the public, and begin the path to victory in the London council elections in 2026, the mayoral election in 2028, and the general election in 2029.
That is why I’m endorsing Tom Tugendhat. He is the only candidate who can win back South West London and not only take the fight to the Liberal Democrats, but Labour and Reform as well.
Tom is already proving he can unify those from across our party, because he is a traditional, common-sense conservative. From Damian Green, the former One Nation Chair, to Steve Baker, former ERG Chair; from Jake Berry in the North to Simon Jupp in the South; from former MPs like Sara Britcliffe to the new generation of Conservative MPs such as Patrick Spencer and Dr Neil Shastri-Hurst.
Tom is proving he can unify our Party and draw a line under the infighting, and this is because he has always stood up for Conservative values. In Parliament, he voted against the Covid vaccine passport and did not support the National Insurance rise because he believes in lower taxes and empowering people – something that all Conservatives can rally behind.
As well as reuniting us around shared values, Tom has demonstrated that as a leader he would focus on delivering for hard working people. I know he’s committed to low taxes, creating opportunity, and delivering growth not just for London, but for every region and nation in the Union. And I know that if our nation as a whole prospers, so does London.
We need someone who says what he will do and then delivers it. And Tom always delivers on his promises. He served our country on military operations in Iraq and Afghanistan. From the backbenches, he was one of the first to warn of the threats from Russia, China, and Iran (and was sanctioned for it).
In government, he continued the fight to keep our country safe. He passed the National Security Act and oversaw the arrest and charging of more Russian and Chinese spies than in the previous decade. Tom would be a leader who delivers.
We need to move forward, and Tom is our only chance of doing that. He can unite the conservative family. He can return us to conservative values. He can rebuild trust with the British public and deliver on their priorities.
If we want to win South West London back, the answer is simple. The answer is Tom Tugendhat.
