Since our last monthly Next Tory leader survey was published, Boris Johnson has compared Theresa May’s Chequers scheme to a suicide vest, co-announced a divorce in turbulent circumstances, and returned to scrag Chequers again and again. The accelerating pace of his interventions on the matter have confirmed him as Target Number One on the list of May’s internal opponents.
None the less, he is still at the top of the table. Sajid Javid remains in second place and is up five points. No-one else has three figures worth of backers except Jeremy Hunt, who at nine per cent all but doubles his score last month. The Foreign Secretary did exceptionally well in this month’s Cabinet League Table.
“Other” is also very close to double figures as a percentage. So as the Conservative conference get’s going in earnest, our Next Tory Leader is a two-horse race, with Johnson clearly out in front. Next month, we may well try some run-offs again. Johnson speaks on Tuesday lunchtime at a ConservativeHome fringe meeting.
