Priti Patel is a former Home Secretary, and is MP for Witham.
Britain is a great country but currently face a huge economic crisis. Tackling this requires a Prime Minister with the skills and experience to put the national interest first and unify the Conservative party.
Our mission is to work night and day to restore public trust and competence in our government.
Everyone knows that I was a loyal supporter of Boris Johnson. He delivered Brexit and the vaccine rollout, and he took on Putin and his war in Ukraine. But when he announced that he would not be standing in the leadership contest, I knew that Rishi Sunak was the right choice to lead and unite our country.
As a party and a country, we have faced too much turbulence. Right now, we have a duty to put the public first, to put political differences aside and unite around our new Prime Minister to tackle the unprecedented challenges we face at home and abroad. That’s why I was delighted that Sunak was elected Prime Minister by a majority of Conservative MPs.
Sunak stewarded our economy through the toughest of times like the Covid pandemic. The challenges we are facing now are even greater. His track record of delivery and stability will give confidence to people, businesses and markets alike. I worked with him in government and I know that he will lead government just as he served in it – with integrity, professionalism and accountability. His priorities are supporting hard pressed families with the cost of living, protecting the most vulnerable, building a sustainably lower tax economy that delivers growth and prosperity, defending all parts of our Union and continuing to be Ukraine’s staunchest ally against Putin’s appalling aggression.
Our new Prime Minister will command a strong majority in our parliamentary party and bring the Conservative party together. Heis proud of Britain and is a natural Conservative. He celebrates our history and upholds our party’s principles. I know that he will build a cabinet and a government that unifies the party, drawing in talent from all of its traditions.
On the economy, he will promote competition and dynamism. He will support businesses and entrepreneurs. He will encourage the growth of the free market which, properly regulated, can spread opportunity and wealth to everyone. His is a conservatism that supports strong public services that work alongside the free market, not in place of it.
With a stronger economy that takes advantage of our global Brexit opportunities, a Sunak-led Conservative Party will focus on delivering the peoples priorities, the 2019 mandate and manifesto we were elected to govern on. Control of our borders, defeating the evil of human trafficking and ending the shameful exploitation of the UK’s asylum system with small boats landing on our shores. Safer streets, so that the silent law abiding majority can go about their daily lives without fear. Backing our police to get them out on the beat stopping and preventing crime and ensuring women and girls are protected from intimidation and harassment. A stronger NHS, that delivers for patients with care and compassion, providing the highest quality of care. Outstanding schools, so that every child, irrespective of their background or where they were born, has the opportunity to fulfil their potential. And levelling up, so that every town, village and city in our country gets the investment they need to prosper.
Rishi Sunak is the new leader of the Conservative Party and our Prime Minister because he is the best person to tackle the enormous challenges we face. We can’t afford to go backwards, we have to put our political differences aside and work together to move forward. He will fix the economy and unite the Conservative party so that we can deliver for all people across the United Kingdom by putting them and their needs first.
