Conservative members are often like Conservative voters – but more so. According to YouGov, Tory voters are almost twice as likely than their Labour counterparts to say that the UK should be more supportive towards Israel – by 23 per cent to 12 per cent.
And Conservative voters lean towards Israel, Tory members line up with it, at least if our survey is correct. The proportion is overwhelming: over eight in ten.
It reflects a sense on much of the right that Israel is part of the Western project, and perhaps the shift to that direction in Israel itself over the past 50 years or so, as well as a reaction against political Islam.
Increasingly, Labour is becoming the party of Pakistan and the Palestinians, and the Tories that of India and Israel. It would be a bad thing were our main political parties to become captives of communalism.
