ConservativeHome can exclusively reveal that CCHQ will be bringing back ‘proper’ membership cards. Currently, party members are issued a membership pack, containing a ‘keepsake certificate of membership’ with the party leader’s signature.
The ‘membership certificates’ were introduced by Amanda Milling in 2020, in the interests of reducing the party’s environmental impact. This was greeted with dismay by many party members. Some ConservativeHome readers will be familiar with their capacity to be immediately mislaid.
Jake Berry announced a return for plastic cards at last year’s conference. One year (and two party chairmen) later, members will be pleased to hear that pledge will become a reality. Next week will see the launch of an online vote on their design. Four options will be given to members to vote on.
Whilst it remains to be seen if these will be plastic cards – similar to those used for banks or travel – or the flimsier laminated paper variety used pre-Milling, this move will be welcomed by those wishing to carry the party with them wherever they go. It may also make it easier for some readers to prove their membership for our survey.
