The ever-growing efficiency and higher value of everyday office and household items should also mean that we get more for less. We get more for less. But not in the public sector.
Far better that councils do all they can locally – raise taxes locally to deal with crime, health, education, and the rest – and leave national governments to deal with national issues.
It would release at least £100bn a year, every year, to spend on whatever the government of the day chose. They could drop all the cuts, have more defence spending, and still have huge amounts left over for tax cuts.
